My sister is marrying a man I cannot stand, and everybody thinks I’m jealous because she’s getting married before me. I wish it were that simple. He has never hit her, never cheated that I know of, and he’s charming enough around our parents that they love him.

But I’ve watched him slowly make her smaller. At first it was little jokes about her clothes. Then comments about which friends were “bad influences.” Then he convinced her one of her best friends was disrespectful to their relationship. Then suddenly she stopped going out unless he was invited.

He monitors spending because he’s “better with money,” even though they both work. He constantly corrects her in front of people but does it with this calm smile that makes anyone who reacts look dramatic. I brought it up once and she completely shut me down.

She said I was projecting, that I’ve never liked him, that healthy couples make compromises. Since then I’ve kept my mouth shut because I’m terrified if I push too hard she’ll cut me off and then I’ll have no idea what’s happening in her life.

The wedding is coming and I’m supposed to stand beside her, smile for pictures, give a speech about how happy I am for them, and I feel sick thinking about it. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe I’m reading normal relationship stuff as controlling because I already dislike him.

That uncertainty is what keeps me quiet. I don’t want to become the sibling who tries to sabotage a marriage because I think I know better. But I also don’t want to look back ten years from now and remember all the signs I noticed and said nothing about.

I’ve decided I’ll show up, be kind, keep the door open, and never let him isolate her from me no matter how uncomfortable it gets. I just hate that sometimes loving somebody means standing close enough to catch them without being able to stop them from walking somewhere you’re scared to follow.
