I found messages on my mom’s phone that made me realize she has been giving my adult sister money behind my dad’s back for years. Not a few hundred dollars here and there. I’m talking rent, credit cards, car payments, medical bills, thousands at a time.

My dad thinks they’re finally in a good position for retirement. He talks about paying off the house and traveling. My mom apparently has been quietly draining savings to keep my sister afloat because my sister’s husband is terrible with money and she refuses to let Dad know how bad things are.

I only found out because Mom asked me to help fix something on her phone and a text popped up while I was holding it. I didn’t go digging at first, but the message was so obvious that later I asked her directly. She admitted everything and then immediately begged me not to tell Dad.

She said he would refuse to help my sister, that he would “make it a whole thing,” and that as a mother she can’t watch one of her children lose her home. I asked how much money and she wouldn’t give me a number. That scared me more than anything.

Now every time my dad talks about retirement I feel like I’m participating in financial infidelity by staying quiet. But if I tell him, I’m betraying my mom and possibly causing a massive family explosion. If I tell my sister she needs to stop taking money, she’ll know Mom told me and probably deny how bad things are.

And the part nobody wants to say is that my sister is not helpless. She and her husband make choices. New phones, vacations, eating out, expensive kids activities, then suddenly there’s an “emergency” and Mom rescues them. I understand wanting to help your child, but at what point does helping one adult child become stealing security from your spouse without their consent?

I haven’t done anything yet because every option makes me feel disloyal to somebody. For now I’m carrying information that doesn’t belong to me and watching two people I love live in completely different versions of the same marriage.
