I have a good salary, a decent credit score, and no one in my life knows I’m nearly drowning in consumer debt. Not medical debt. Not student loans. Not some tragic emergency that makes the story sympathetic. Just years of spending money I didn’t have because I was embarrassed to look broke.

Trips with friends, wedding gifts, Christmas, restaurants, upgrading my phone, buying furniture for an apartment I could barely afford, putting car repairs on a credit card, then taking a personal loan to consolidate the credit cards, then using the cards again.

I became incredibly good at making irresponsibility look like normal middle-class life. My girlfriend thinks I’m responsible because I never miss a payment. What she doesn’t know is that I sometimes make one minimum payment using money freed up by another credit line.

She talks about buying a house together in a couple years and every time she says “we should start saving for a down payment” I feel like I’m lying just by nodding. I’ve finally stopped the bleeding. I deleted shopping apps, canceled subscriptions, started cooking, sold a few things, and I’m actually paying balances down.

But now I’m stuck with a different problem: do I tell her while I’m still in the mess, or do I fix it first? Part of me wants to quietly clean it up and then confess once I have a success story. Another part knows that’s manipulation. I’d basically be controlling how angry she’s allowed to be by deciding what version of the truth she gets.

The debt is one thing. The secrecy is another. I always thought cheating on someone’s trust meant sleeping with somebody else. Turns out you can cheat on the financial reality of a relationship too.
